Today compact flash cards are inexpensive, cameras are fast and computers no longer choke on big files. This lets you shoot RAW or compressed RAW.
I shoot Compressed RAW as I can’t tell the difference between the two and the file size is only half the size.
Looking for the resident Long-eared owl at Thicksons Woods Waterfront Trail this afternoon and noticed a female Kestrel hunting along the hydro lines..
With this light, I was hoping to catch a few birds in flight with high shutter speeds but didn’t get many opportunities

Having been involved in various aspects of nature photography for some 37 years now, I learned a variety of techniques from many masters of nature photography. I improved my own skills by reading their books and practicing what I read about.
Today we had the pleasure of seeing and photographing the Long-eared Owl in flight, as usual, here in Southern Ontario this time of year the lack of light was an issue, it was another un-forecasted dull overcast day.
With reports of Short-eared Owls cruising the meadows, we took a trip out there today in hopes of spotting one of these birds. But it was the Long-eared Owl that showed up.

Every year since I started bird watching, I’ve taken part in a mid-February event, called The Great Backyard Bird Count. In the dead of our Canadian winter, its a good excuse to get out of your abode and into nature or just sit at your window and observe.
