Kestrel Kill On A Long-eared Owl Hunt
January 19th, 2008 by Rob McKay
We finally had some sun light today so Ann, Paul & I went looking for the resident Long-eared owl at Thicksons Woods Waterfront Trail this afternoon. We started out around 2:00 PM, it was windy and COLD, had to be -15c with the wind chill coming off of Lake Ontario.
I arrived early and noticed a female Kestrel hunting along the hydro lines.
Shot with old crusty, my Nikon D1H & 300mm f/4 Nikkor.

This first shot is out of focus, but it does help tell the story so I included it.
The out of focus dive,
The out of focus dive,
The Kestrel hit ground hard and popped up through the long grass with her kill, what looked like a feild mouse or vole.
The death pinch!
She hauled the mouse back up to the hydro line to finish the job..

This female Kestrel gave me a nasty stare…
Happy little falcon
After this she took the mouse and stashed it in a pine tree, then carried on looking for more.
And to top this all off, we did find our Long-eared Owl, this time in some light. We also watched the resident Northern Harrier (Marsh Hawk)

Great shots and a great pictorial story Rob. Right place at the right time for such a good series of shots. Beauty of the LEO too!
Thanks Frank,
It was a fun outing, windy, cold, but the sun was out for a change. We found the long-eared owl in the first stand of pines we looked in, talk about luck. The rest of the day was just a bonus!

Wow! What fantastic series Rob. To be in the right place at the right time. This isn’t luck since you created it. Well done. Fantastic tutorial. Congratulations. finally someone got a good shot of the LEO in some light. That’s tough to do. You had a good.
