Today we had the pleasure of seeing and photographing another Long-eared Owl near the same location from last weekend, but this time in-flight. As usual, here in Southern Ontario this time the lack of light was an issue, it was another un-forecasted dull overcast day.
We (Frank, Paul, Ann & myself) searched the Short-eared owl location(s) in hopes of getting a glimpse. Quietly searching through the small stands of pine trees, I bent down to pick up an owl pellet, at that moment very close by I heard what I think was the wing tips clapping together, looking to the right we could see the owl flying off westward. We saw the owl a few more times but no matter how hard we tried, it always ended up being backlit!
We also saw quite a few cotton tailed rabbits, the resident Northern Harrier, a few Red-Tailed Hawks, Northern Shrike & a female Kestrel. From there, we carried on to the woods and viewed the Great Horned Owl sitting high a top a favorite tree.
We originally mistook this to be the Short-eared owl we looked for last week, but it has been identified as a Long-eared owl.
It was a great day, for seeing, but not the best for photography.
A few photos from the day.
