Northern Harrier / Marsh Hawk
February 16th, 2008 by Rob McKay
Its been two weeks since I last was out with my trusty D1H camera and with today’s weather, I had to get out!

It was after lunch that I headed to Halls Road, the usual large amount of chickadees, a nuthatch and a few of the other regulars but nothing too interesting. I did bump into Joe Noordman, (always a pleasure Joe!) who pointed me in right direction of the horned larks. I watched the larks for 30 minutes then headed to the Waterfront Trail at Thicksons Woods. Each time I have visited this area (looking for owls) I have seen a resident Northern Harrier, but this time I saw two of these Marsh hawks quartering the fields low in search of dinner. The west wind was howling down near the lake and it was COLD! I noticed the two harries twice hunt a section of field between the lake and the trail, flying into the west wind searching for prey. I positioned myself between the path and Lake Ontario figuring this spot must be a good feeding lane for the hawks. I hunkered down in about two and a half feet of snow, facing east my back was against the wind and some logs, I waited. Within 20 minutes the two followed and I had a few good opportunities for some photos. They didn’t see me and flew right at me, what excitement! A few shots from this afternoon.
Nikon D1H & Nikon 300mm f/4.
Coming in straight at me! What fun!
This is a juvenile male Northern Hariier (Thanks Colin for pointing that out!).

Beautiful shots Rob. You truly captured them today. Nicely done. Ann
Wow, you couldn’t ask for better conditions, and your usual sharp eye and sharper lenswork paid off. Well done!
